FISHEYE is made up of the enigmatic underground legends DJ Stef-Eye and Tomasia. Raised both overseas and in New York, Tomasia and DJ Stef-Eye met in 1996 as members of Elevated, a crew of hiphop artists based in New York City. They developed a following performing live hiphop at venues such as the Nuyorican Poets Café, Joe's Pub and SOB's where they shared the stage with hiphop pioneer KRS-One. The pair quickly became sought after and were featured on the urban radio shows Liquid Sound Lounge and The Underground Railroad (WBAI, NYC) and also in the hiphop documentary, Word (Tony Greer) along side heavy hitters, Kool Herc, Capone, and Eminem.
Through Zaphryn Follicle Audio, DJ Stef-Eye has developed a unique sound that has been called “a new form of soul electro hiphop jazz fusion”. King Britt described her sound as “dope...rza-esque femininity”. Zaphryn Follicle Audio can be heard in Trackers, Oxygen Media and Devil's Twilight, Freed Pictures (aired on PBS). DJ Stef-Eye can also be heard on the albums Home Brewz and Meta Bass N' Breath, Bomb records. A prolific musician, DJ Stef-Eye has appeared at the Bronx Museum, featured on BBC radio, performed with the legendary Graham Haynes, and can be seen in the Lauryn Hill video Everything is Everything. Most recently DJ Stef-Eye has performed alongside Ras G, Tokimonsta and King Britt as part of the Saturn Never Sleeps ensemble.
Emerging from New York City's spoken word renaissance, where she shared the stage with Saul Williams, Tomasia is a powerful lyricist who Ursula Rucker has called, “captivating, inspiring and breathtaking”. Tomasia has opened up for Gil Scott-Heron and performed with nine time Grammy award nominee Me'Shell N'DegeOcello who called her “...too funky...". She has shared the stage with Mos Def who exclaimed “She's really good!” as well as Mums the Schemer (Oz) who declared, “She's like a female Rakim!” According to Okayplayer, “Tomasia's rhymes are like a hybrid between MC Lyte and Angela Davis, a poisonous combination.”
In 2007, FishEye released their debut album, Death of the Fre$h, on homegirl records. They received acclaim from such luminaries as platinum selling producer King Britt who wrote “Their songs created an amazing atmosphere that immersed me in their world of urban landscapes”, Ursula Rucker, who declared, “I am a Fisheye Fan!”, Wood Harris (The Wire, Hendrix) who hailed Death of the Fre$h as “Good music...dope!”, Apollo Heights, who described Fisheye as “...chicktronica...no other ladies are doin' it like (them)...” and Okayplayer, who wrote, “Fisheye enchants their fans with ethereal instrumentation and...lyrics”. FishEye were recently featured on Ursula Rucker's album, Ruckus Sound Sysdom, and are currently working on an EP entitled, A Fish Tale.
